Jonathan’s Story

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.” John 13:7 As many of you know, we recently lost our second born son, Jonathan to colon cancer. When Jonathan was first diagnosed a year ago December, our family was of course stunned and disappointed. As the months passed by and chemo treatment was pursued, our prayers were, “Please heal him, Lord!” But with that, I had another prayer, “Lord, use this cancer to…

A Comforting Promise: God’s Presence

Throughout the last year, I’ve been reading Charles Spurgeon’s devotional “Morning and Evening,” and one of the recent entries (morning of July 26) urges us to “Take care that thy faith is of the right kind – that it is not a mere belief of doctrine, but a simple faith, depending on Christ, and on Christ alone.”  That morning, I was feeling overwhelmed with some responsibilities and situations, and those words reminding me depend on Jesus himself were what I needed. Pondering what…

My Story

“Who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkled by his blood…” 1 Peter 1:2             Often times we really don’t know each other’s stories … where we come from- our background and shaping, our “salvation story”- how we came to understand and accept all that Jesus did for us on the cross, and our “happily ever after story” – where God has…

Grace Alone

Someone recently suggested that we tell the stories of how the Lord brought us to faith, so I’ll share part of my story today.   I was blessed to be born into a Bible-believing, church-attending family and at the age of six, my mom told me that I could pray a prayer to invite Jesus into my heart.  At that point in my life I was convinced of the reality of God and the reality of hell and wanted to…

Psalm 20

“May the Lord answer you in the day of trouble!May the name of the God of Jacob protect you!May he send you help from the sanctuary and give you support from Zion!May he remember all your offerings and regard with favor your burnt sacrifices!Selah May he grant you your heart’s desire and fulfill all your plans!May we shout for joy over your salvation, and in the name of our God set up our banners!May the Lord fulfill all your petitions!…

A Love Story

A Love Story In one recent Sunday teaching of Acts, Pastor Dave pointed out how God orchestrated the events in the Ethiopian Eunuch’s life for his salvation. In this blog, I will recount God’s amazing work in my salvation almost two decades ago! My hope is that that my story will encourage your heart and remind us of our Savior’s unfailing love and Sovereignty! First Church Visit.  I was a graduate teaching assistant at the time. Two students in my…

Dormant Sprouters

Hi, ladies,  I came across this little devotional that I wrote a couple years back. It freshly encouraged me to “remember the button weed” as I patiently wait for God’s harvest!  Hope you are encouraged as well!!!  See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the fall and spring rains. – James 5:7 NIV Growing up on a farm afforded me many opportunities to work hard. One of them was…

Sabbath

It has been a few years since our family has started faithfully keeping a Biblical Sabbath, and I can’t express how much of a blessing it has been to us. It has become an integral part of our week and health. What do I mean by Biblical Sabbath? I take my definition from Peter Scazzero in his book “Emotionally Healthy Leader.” He says that a Biblical Sabbath is a 24 hour block of time where we stop work, enjoy rest,…

After a Long Time – Reflections on Unanswered Prayer

“After a long time, in the third year, the Word of the Lord came to Elijah…” 12 Kings 18:1 “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked … “There is nothing there,” he said. Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.” The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea…” The sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came…

For a Helmet the Hope of Salvation

This summer I’ve been involved in the early morning women’s Bible study on 1 & 2 Thessalonians over Zoom.  It’s been so great to connect with women I wouldn’t have otherwise had the opportunity to see during this Covid-19 period of time. One section that the study highlighted was 1 Thessalonians 5:8: “But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.”…

The Prayers of Habakkuk

The Prayers of Habakkuk I have been “chewing on” the book of Habakkuk and found the prophet’s prayers very inspiring and encouraging, especially considering the various crises we are currently facing. In the first two chapters, Habakkuk laid out two complaints before the LORD. After receiving God’s answers, the prophet found great comfort, joy, and strength in God’s promises despite the coming severe judgement on Judah.  Witnessing the prevalent violence, destruction, and injustice in Judah, Habakkuk was deeply troubled and…

Amazing Grace

This is the original hymn written by John Newton in 1779. It is by far my favorite hymn, and I have sung it for many years in times of trials, happiness, and celebration. The hymn has recently become so much sweeter to me, as my eldest son and I have been studying about the time of John Newton in our history book.

Galatians 6:9 / Growing Weary

Stonebrook Women’s Blog:  (Judy Anderson) We are in a bit of a war over here.  A couple of months ago we found that somehow cloth moths had been brought into the home.  So we decided that it was time to nip this in the bud and see what we could do to get rid of them.  We deduced that they were mainly in two bedrooms and decided that every single item in those rooms must be cleaned and washed, including…
