Jeremiah 17:7-8

Jeremiah 17:7-8

“The person who trusts in the Lord,
whose confidence indeed is the Lord, is blessed. He will be like a tree planted by water:
it sends its roots out toward a stream,
it doesn’t fear when heat comes, and its foliage remains green.
It will not worry in a year of drought
or cease producing fruit.”
-Jeremiah 17:7-8

I love the picture this passage paints of what it can look like to trust in the Lord. The tree is planted by the water, put there on purpose to have constant access to what it needs to survive. When trouble or hardship comes, it is not shaken or changed because it knows its life source will always be available.

I so want to be like this tree! I want my trust deep in the Lord, to have confidence that no matter what comes my way in this life, that He is in control and He is with me. I feel like when something hard comes my way or even just the worry that something bad might happen, my first reaction is to curl my roots in, so to speak. I want to hide and wallow in my worry and my “what – ifs” instead of reaching out toward His truth and comfort.

The only reason this tree is green is because of the stream. It cannot be healthy on its own, it needs the sustenance of that water from the stream. In the same way, the only way I can be spiritually healthy is put my trust in the Lord and receive my sustenance from Him.
