Good Friday

An interactive liturgy
for household worship

This page is designed to guide you through the Scriptures as we remember the death of our beautiful Savior, Jesus. It will give you an opportunity to respond in song, prayer, and reflection.

We invite you on Good Friday to gather with your household to worship together. Plan to spend about 30 minutes together, and if you have communion elements in your home, gather them up now so they’re ready to be taken when directed.

Begin by selecting an individual to lead your household through this page. As you read, take the time to pause between sections to ask and answer questions, pray, and spend further time in reflection. As you gather around, ask everyone to bring a Bible, and remove any distractions (phones, screens, etc.) to promote focus and reverence during this time.

Open in Prayer

Great and loving Father,

As we gather on this Good Friday to remember the events of our Savior’s death,
we ask that you would open our eyes to both the tragedy and the beauty,
to the gruesome horrors experienced by our Lord and friend,
and to the unfathomable love that we find in that act,
as we remember that Jesus went to the cross
that we could be made right with God.

Amen

Take Communion Together

If you have any communion elements, take this time to gather and distribute the bread and the cup. If you do not have elements available, you may still continue with this time of prayer and reflection.

Read from Isaiah:
“We all went astray like sheep;
we all have turned to our own way;
and the Lord has punished him [Jesus]
for the iniquity of us all.”
Isaiah 53:6 (CSB)

Spend a minute in silent prayer and reflection, remembering your sins against God. Privately confess your sins to God, remembering what Jesus died to forgive.

Read from 1 John:
“The one who believes in the Son of God has this testimony within himself….And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.”
1 John 5:10-11 (CSB)

Pray:

Precious Savior,

As we reflect on the events of the cross,
We remember the great price you paid,
As you bled and died for our sins.
You took on the punishment that we deserved,
And for that, we are eternally grateful.
We eagerly await your return,
Knowing that you will make all things right,
And that we will live with you forever. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen

Take the communion elements together now.

Closing Prayer

Holy Spirit,

In light of what we have just read and heard,
we ask that you would empower us
to boldly follow in the footsteps of our Savior,
as we respond in humble obedience to our Father,
considering others as more important than ourselves.
Lift up the good news of Jesus in our own hearts,
and compel us to share this good news
with all of those around us,
to the glory of God. In Jesus’ Name,
Amen
